Dr. Novera Ghayoor Chughtai Urogynecologist
Dr. Novera Ghayoor Chughtai is a distinguished consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology, with extensive expertise in Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery. She earned her MBBS from DOW Medical College in 2004, completed her FCPS in OBGYN in 2010, and pursued a fellowship in Urogynecology at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in 2014.
She currently serves as Director of the OBGYN Residency Program at AKU (2019–2024) and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 2019. Previously, she held roles as Senior Instructor (2015–2019), Instructor (2011), Associate Program Director of both the OBGYN Residency and Urogynecology Fellowship Programs, and is a recognized CPSP Supervisor for the Urogynecology Fellowship Program (2023–present).
Dr. Chughtai has led major academic and institutional initiatives, including achieving ACGME-I accreditation for the OBGYN Residency Program at AKUH—the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. She directed a national-level capacity building program in collaboration with JPMC to train faculty in Urogynecology and is actively involved in postgraduate medical education (PGME) supervision, curriculum design, and accreditation. Her academic contributions include the development of simulation-based workshops on perineal tear repair and pelvic anatomy, and the design of Entrusted Professional Activities (EPAs) for transitioning to a competency-based education model.
She has contributed to curriculum development for FMIC’s residency program in Afghanistan, and served on various committees including the Board of Studies at Jinnah Sindh Medical University, the AKU PGME task force, CBME surveillance, and program review committees. Dr. Chughtai has over 10 peer-reviewed publications (plus three accepted for 2025), including systematic reviews, RCTs, and book chapters, and has served as Principal Investigator and Co-PI in research grants.
Her 2025 accepted publications include studies on prolapse surgery outcomes, validation of urinary tract symptom tools in Urdu, and a book chapter on menopause. She has supervised eight urogynecology fellows who contribute nationally, and has over a decade of experience teaching undergraduates, postgraduates, physiotherapists, and nursing staff. Her teaching innovations include educational modules on abortion and LGBTQ+ topics.
Clinically, she has advanced urogynecology services at AKUH, initiated aesthetic gynecology services, and developed departmental pathways for urinary retention and pelvic pain. She is a frequent national and international speaker, a mentor to OBGYN residents, and the developer of a residency exchange program with Koohi Goth Hospital.
Her community engagement includes awareness programs, simulation training workshops, and public education through media and webinars. She has received numerous honors, including the prestigious ACGME-I Physician Educator Award (2024)—as the first Pakistani recipient—and the Collaborative Award for Teaching (2022) for achieving international accreditation of five residency programs. She also received the Innovation in Education Award at AKUH for developing a perineal tear simulation model using beef tongue.
Dr. Chughtai is an active member of national and international professional bodies such as the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Pakistan, the Pakistan Association of Urogynecologists, IUGA, and ICS.
